Honest Review on Using Thayers Witch Hazel Astringent (Lemon) for 7 Days

Most of us are familiar with Thayers Witch Hazel Toner and many swear to its benefits. I also am one of those who tried and that’s how I get to know Thayers Witch Hazel Astringent (Lemon).

Thayers is known for its alcohol-free toner however, it seems that I need a little bit stronger product because my face can be the best shot for this country’s oil crisis. Thayers Witch Hazel Astringent seemed to be the answer.

I have been trying to read some experience about this less popular astringent (in comparison to the toner) but I can only found a few comments here and there but no full blog. So I am here to pave a way for those of you who want to read a feedback and that I may help you get to a buying (or not) decision.

Thayers website has articles to explain about their toners and astringents and their pairings.

Through series of readings of articles reviewing Thayers toners over its own toners and astringent and Thayers against other brands, I became convinced I had to give Thayers Witch Hazel Astringent a try. I was even more convinced when I took the quiz and the result reinforced that I am fit for this astringent.

Although the 10% SD Alcohol 40B speaks of dryness to skin, the filet of Aloe Vera in it seemed to save the skin from parching. If you want to know more how each ingredient in the astringent works, here is the CosDNA link for this product.

This Lemon Astringent promises not only to cleanse, tone, and moisturize the skin but also to fight blemishes and bacteria; thus, helping us in our acne battle.

Packaging and Content

It looks just like the toner except that its label says Astringent, ofc. I bought mine in 12 oz from a Shopee store beautifullfinds_bff for Php 695 plus shipping fee.

If you are quite familiar with the Thayers toner, you would see almost no difference in the content. For those who are just starting to know Thayers products, you need not worry if you see that colors of the liquid slightly vary from one bottle to another and there are some bits of particles visible. According to their site’s FAQ, it is only because of the natural ingredients they use and assuringly, they are safe to use.

Impressions

The moment I uncapped it, I can smell the lemon essence. Its quite refreshing especially since my skin becomes itchy at the end of the day. I believe this will be even more useful come summer season.

I used it at night after washing my face with Fairness and Flawless Noni Soap. Good thing about Thayers Lemon Astringent is that it is different from other astringents I know. Despite its alcohol content, it’s not irritating. If I had not known better, I would even put a lot on my face because I am so into the refreshing citrusy feels that pampers my skin.

To really test the effectiveness of this product, I decided to use nothing after the astringent since at this point of my life, I more afraid on the effect of using the wrong products together than sleeping with no moisturizer at all.

The next day, I just woke up with my usual oily morning face. But the positive note was no breakouts and it seems that redness tone down a bit. As I was impressed, I decided to use it again that morning before I put on my day cream, which was iWhite Korea Whitening Vita Facial Cream. However, as the day progresses my face became more oily than usual and I had painful bumps even before the day ends. Apparently, they are not a perfect combination.

So I decided to use the astringent at night time

Pros

A week might be so short to really see the product on its full work but this astringent set my hopes up. 🙂

It gives my skin a relaxation it needs after a busy day. What I like about this is that I reap the benefits of the astringent without hurting my skin. Since most astringents would cause the skin to peel and would even aggravate the redness especially when exposed to sun.

I have observed that my pores shrinked and the redness of my skin was minimized. And my oiliness seemed to lay low. Yay!

I can tell that it’s compatible with my soap and my go-to sheet mask because I got no new acne and my skin is glowing when I use my mask after this astringent. 🙂

Cons

One of its few downsides is that it’s not easily available. It may be available online such as in BeautyMNL, Shopee, and Lazada, or even in Thayers website, and in some Watson stores. However, they are easily sold out and if you are to buy in Thayers website you have to cover the shipping fee (international rate).

Most would consider this expensive since the price varies from one online store to another. While Thayers sells them online Php 573.41 (as to this writing) you will still have to pay for the shipping fee that might cost Php 2,000 more or less. Local online shops sell them from Php 500 to Php 600.

Verdict

I will continue using this. As expected among many products with natural ingredients, the benefits don’t appear overnight. I have to be religious in using this astringent and be cautious at the same time since too much use of astringent may trigger the skin to be more oily. This helped me with my pores and the redness but not much with the existing acne that I have. Luckily, I did not have breakouts using this. So I am just on my way on making my existing acne disappear.

The 12 oz. bottle can last for a couple months or longer since I only use it at night.

I will give you an update after a month of using this.

I think it’s valuable for it’s price since it lasts for 2-3 months and by then, you can save money for another bottle 😉
